This is my fourth or fifth time doing the Home series from Yoga with Adriene (I’ve tried the others over the years but this one’s my favourite). It often involves getting from Downward Dog to standing at the top of the map. There are different ways to do this — you can take very small steps, for example — OR, as Adriene says, you could jump.
For years, I thought, “yeah, right, lady”. It’s hard to explain why, but I simply could not picture myself doing that. I could blame general unfitness, an utter lack of coordination, the careless driver who destroyed my knee … but I think in the end it mainly came down to confidence. I didn’t think I could.
I am not sure what is different this time around. I am still a fairly unfit, overweight middle-aged woman with a bad knee and no coordination, but suddenly, listening to Adriene talking about how to get to the top of the mat, I thought “OR … I could jump”.
And you know what? I could. I can.
