Weekly Photo Challenge: Merge

The Husband and I have taken to diving in a freshwater lake about an hour’s drive from our house. The lake in question used to be an open-pit coal mine, which was flooded when the coal ran out.

At first, we thought the strange dark lumps we could see at the bottom might be left-over pieces of coal but upon closer inspection, they turned out to be moving slightly:

Lots of small mussels, opening and closing.

Here you can see that the mussels attach to an object on the ground and then merge into a colony:

The photo isn’t great but I thought I’d include it because the wood is still visible.

I love how out of great destruction, life and a new habitat can spring. I often wonder about the world without us.

Things that happen at night

The other night, I heard cat screaming in the garden and rushed outside to make sure Charlie was ok. (She tends to draw the short stick in fights — she’s just too nice.)

Too harmless for her own good — but with the cutest platypus tail:)

In my rush to get down two flights of stairs and around the house, I forgot to take a flashlight — or rather, the thought occurred to me but I decided there wasn’t time to look for one.

Of course, once outside I regretted that decision. Usually, there is some light coming from somewhere but this particular night, it really was pitch-black. There was no way I could have found Charlie, but fortunately Charlie, probably attracted by my uncertain stumbling around, came to check on me. Once mutually assured that we were both ok, I retraced my steps along the garden path and — almost, almost, almost — stepped on a hedgehog that had hunkered down there, probably waiting for both Charlie and me to go away.

Obviously not a photo taken that night but possibly the same hedgehog.

Instead, curious about what I was looking at, Charlie came running. Wanting to save her from getting a bloody nose and the hedgehog from having a heart attack, I grabbed her and took her inside with me to give the hedgehog time to get away.

Of course, Isla strongly objected to having been left out of all the excitement, so I took her for a midnight walk — this time avec flashlight! And this is what we saw:

Flashlight-lit snap of snails having a midnight snack (a squashed plum fallen off our back neighbour’s tree). Watch out for that hedgehog, guys!

The husband, out of concern for both (he assures me) my bare feet and the safety of the resident hedgehogs fastened a keyring to the back of a flashlight so it now lives on our key rack and can easily be grabbed as I rush by in one emergency or other.  All’s well that ends well.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Growth

These photos were taken last June in the Alps, just on the Italian side of the border. I think we were somewhat above 2000 metres at this point. I like how there is growth as soon as the sun releases the ground from its snow cover.

And of course, as soon as there is growth, there is more life:
