Unfolding

Taking out the paper to the recycling bin today, I came across this big moth, drying its wings, getting ready for its first flight. I’m both in awe of nature and envious. Imagine “knowing” that you will be able to fly and that you are about to experience it for the first time. I listened to a radio programme a while back (probably an episode of This American Life) where people were asked which superpower they would choose if they had the option — being able to fly or being able to be invisible. For me, it’s a no-brainer — imagine being able to spread your wings and take off! What could be greater than that?

A bit of research leads us to believe that it is a Willowherb Hawkmoth (although it isn't quite as green as the one shown here) or at least a very close relative.

Husband's fingers for scale -- I seem to forever be telling him "Hey, come here and put your hand there."

Procrastination

I’ve been wanting to know how to make a photo collage for a while now and a quick google search netted me this helpful guide. Of course, I had to give it a try right away:

Obviously, it could still use some work but I mainly wanted to understand the principle. I have a little photo printer so this could be a fun way of making my own postcards, using snapshots from the trip.

Now, back to work…

Random cat post

Since I don’t want to be accused of low cat content on this blog, I hereby give you:

Charlie -- thoroughly content with Life, the Universe, and Everything.

Spot the cat

(The photo above was taken a couple of weeks ago when we had a bit of a warm spell.)

If Isla’s favourite place in the world is bed, Charlie’s is the lounge chair. Ideally, there are a couple of people nearby, talking and keeping her safe from other cats. (Charlie is a former stray whom we ended up taking in a couple of years ago because other cats kept beating her up — now all we have to do is make sure Isla doesn’t beat her up.)

In the summer, the lounge chair is outside all the time and we cover it at night to protect it from dew and rain. As far as Charlie is concerned, this makes the lounge chair even better:
